The European records Ronaldo and Messi haven’t broken

Cristiano Ronaldo may have swapped the Spanish capital for the stately baroque buildings and grand squares of Turin in the summer, but his battle for European supremacy with Lionel Messi still very much exists.

The two stars have lit up the European stage over the years with Messi recently overtaking his rival for most hat-tricks in the Champions League.

You can bet your horses Ronaldo will be looking to get his own back when he returns from suspension with Juventus, but despite all the records the two currently boast, there are more than a few that have so far eluded them.

Here, Sportsmail take a look at all the European records Ronaldo and Messi have not broke… yet at least.

Most goals in European Cup finals

Record: 7 – Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas (both Real Madrid)

Ronaldo leads the way over his rival in this department, having been fortunate enough to feature in six finals.

The Portugal star has found the back four times in the final (one apiece in 2008 and 2014, and two in 2017) but is still some way off Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas’ record and at 33 is quickly running out of time.

Messi on the other hand looks almost certain to miss out on this particular record with only two goals in the 2009 and 2011 finals.

Most appearances in the UEFA Champions League/European Cup (including qualifying)

Record: 172 – Iker Casillas (Real Madrid, Porto)

The two stars are in a league of their own when it comes to goals scored in Europe, but have a way to go to reach Iker Casillas’ all-time appearance record for Europe’s premier club competition.

While the Spaniard has managed 172 games since his debut in 1999, Ronaldo is just behind with 158 but Lionel Messi is a long way back in 12th on 126.

However, he is more than two years younger than Ronaldo.

Final wins with the most teams in the UEFA Champions League

Record: 3 – Clarence Seedorf (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan 2003, 2007)

Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf proved his longevity with four UEFA Champions League wins across 12 years as a player.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be keen to match this with new club Juventus, having already claimed the trophy with Manchester United once and Real Madrid four times.

This is one record it is unlikely 31-year-old Messi will ever break, having remained a one-club man his entire career.

Highest number of teams scored for in the UEFA Champions League

Record: 6 – Zlatan Ibrahimović (Ajax, Juventus, Internazionale, Barcelona, Milan, Paris Saint-Germain)

Across his rather nomadic career, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has proven his goalscoring credentials at the highest level.

His first came for Ajax aged 21 on his competition debut, scoring twice against Lyon on September 17 2002, and he has gone on to register for Juventus, Inter, Barcelona, Milan and Paris Saint-German in his career.

It is unlikely either Messi or Ronaldo will achieve this feat, with the one-club Barca man now 31.

Ronaldo has scored in the Champions League for Manchester United and Real Madrid, but has yet to register for Juventus in the competition, and would require several more late-career moves to hit this target.

Oldest Champions League final scorer

Record: Paolo Maldini (36 years 333 days) – Milan v Liverpool 2005

Paolo Maldini popped up at the age of 36 and 333 days to write his name into the history books against Liverpool in 2005.

While this record is achievable for both players, they will have to show remarkable patience to get there.

Ronaldo’s first chance will be in the 2021/22 final.

Messi will not be in line until the 2023/24 showpiece – and only then provided it does not take place before 23 May, in which case he would have to wait another year.

Fastest UEFA Champions League goal

Record: Roy Makaay (10.12 seconds) – Bayern München v Real Madrid (07/03/2007)

Roy Makaay established a somewhat daunting target with his strike pretty much straight from kick-off against Madrid in 2007.

Ronaldo’s earliest UEFA Champions League effort came in the fourth minute – for Madrid against Juventus in October 2013.

Messi’s fastest arrived three minutes into Barcelona’s 7-0 win against Celtic in September 2016.

Fastest UEFA Champions League hat-trick

Record: Bafetimbi Gomis (8 mins) – Dinamo Zagreb v Olympique Lyonnais, 07/12/2011

Following a treble against PSV Eindhoven on matchday one of 2018/2019, Messi has edged ahead of Ronaldo to take sole command the record for UEFA Champions League hat-tricks with eight.

However, neither have outstripped Bafétimbi Gomis’s lightning-quick treble against Dinamo, which took just eight minutes.

The swiftest of Messi’s hat-tricks – his first – took 22 minutes (v Arsenal, 06/04/10), though a mere 16 minutes separated his second and fourth strikes in his five-goal salvo against Bayer Leverkusen on 7 March 2012.

Ronaldo’s 12-minute treble against Malmö is his fastest to date.

Luiz Adriano broke new ground by scoring back-to-back UEFA Champions League trios for Shakhtar against BATE in 2014/15 – five goals in the first group meetingand three in the second – but Ronaldo matched him with trebles against Bayern München and Atlético in the 2016/17 knockout phase.

Goals in most UEFA Champions League seasons

Record: Ryan Giggs (16)

Messi scored in a 14th successive UEFA Champions League campaign in 2018/19 to equal Raúl’s record for goal in the most successive Champions League seasons.

Ronaldo has scored in his last 13 – and 13 in total – having failed to register in his first two campaigns, both with United.

To replicate Ryan Giggs’s tally of goals in 16 seasons, Ronaldo may – like the Welshman – need to play on until he is over 40.

Messi can hit that target in 2020/21 if all goes well.

Most goals in a single European season

Record: Radamel Falcao (18), Porto 2010/11

Falcao’s glorious exploits in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League set a mark that Messi and Ronaldo have been unable to emulate. The Colombian’s haul included one goal in qualifying and 17 in the competition proper.

Messi’s best year came in 2011/12 when he ended the European season with 14 strikes, while Ronaldo set a European Cup/UEFA Champions League record with 17 in 2013/14.

Best goals per game average in European Cup/UEFA Champions League

Record: 0.97 – Gerd Muller (Bayern Munich)

In 2017/18, Ronaldo eclipsed Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in nine successive UEFA Champions League games (set with Manchester United in 2002/03), taking his total to ten in the 3-1 quarter-final loss at home to Juventus.

However, when it comes to goals per match, Messi and Ronaldo cannot compete with the all-time record holders. Ronaldo’s UEFA Champions League record stands at 0.77 a game – 121 goals in 158 games – and it is 0.76 in all UEFA club competitions – 123 in 162. Messi has registered more consistently (0.82 in the UEFA Champions League – 103 goals in 126 games; 0.82 in all UEFA competitions – 106 in 130).

Gerd Müller’s 0.97 goals per game ratio continues to look an unbreakable record. In order to reach a similar figure, Messi would need to fire hat-tricks in his next ten games in the competition, while Ronaldo would require trebles in each of his next 16.
