“Ronaldo’s goals helped cover up Real Madrid’s weaknesses”

Iago Aspas continues to impress everybody with his performances on the pitch for Celta Vigo this season.

The striker has eight goals to his name and is the top-scoring Spaniard in LaLiga. He’ll hope to continue on that golden run when his side welcome Real Madrid to Balaidos this Sunday. Aspas has revealed that there was interest from Madrid in signing him last summer but they opted to sign someone else instead.

“They didn’t contact me and there weren’t even talks (about a transfer) between the two clubs, but yes, there was interest from Madrid. In the end they signed Mariano (Diaz) to cover the striker position,” Aspas explained. “I have four years left on my contract and I’m very happy at Celta. Although, as I always say, in football you never know what could happen.”

Madrid’s failure to score goals has made many question whether they got that decision right in the summer. “Cristiano helped cover up many weaknesses. He won a lot of matches because of how hard he hit the ball but I think they’re playing better this year than they did last season.”

Aspas, naturally, didn’t want to stick the boot in when it comes to Lopetegui’s failure to turn the situation around. It was Julen who gave Aspas a real chance in the Spain team. “In football, it’s results business. There isn’t time for you to implement your system. There were a lot of changes. The departure of Cristiano, whose goals covered up a lot of their weaknesses.. to see Real Madrid in eighth or nineth place, it’s understandable that the directors would become anxious.”

As for the match against Real Madrid this Sunday, Aspas had this to say: “It’ll be difficult. They’re Real Madrid and they have the best players in the world (but) we hope to come away with all three points.”
