Messi is the most lethal scorer in Champions League group stage

There aren’t many records left for Lionel Messi to break and it now appears that he’s breaking them without even realising. As posted by the official Champions League Twitter account, Messi is the top scorer in the group stage of the competition if you start from the 1992/93 season. It’s yet another stat which puts the Argentine in a league of his own.

The FC Barcelona star has scored 65 goals in that time and tops the list. The next in line, perhaps unsurprisingly, is Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo with 61. There’s then a significant drop to third place with Karim Benzema (43) and the already retired Ruud van Nistelrooy (39) is in fourth.

Messi’s three goals in the opening match against PSV and his brace against Tottenham have pushed him to the top of the standings – and deservedly so. It’s worth remembering that Messi didn’t play a single minute in either of Barça’s matches against Inter Milan.

Messi returned to training alongside his teammates this Thursday and he’s expected to be involved against Real Betis on Sunday.
