Marco Asensio admits the club did not approach him regarding an upgrade of his number 20 squad number this season.

The 22-year-old is gaining increasing prominence in the first-team at the Bernabeu, but was not approached to occupy the number seven shirt – handed to new signing Mariano Diaz – when Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.

“I did not have the chance to decide my shirt number,” Asensio told reporters, as cited by Diario AS.

“No other numbers were offered to me, I was never told about any change in the club’s plans so I have not had a decision to make.”

When pressed on whether he would instead prefer the number 10 shirt, currently occupied by Luka Modric, the Spaniard admitted: “Well yes, I have always liked that number.

“But it has a very capable occupier at the moment! Perhaps in future years we can talk about it.”
