€120m Barcelona offer could finally seal deal, key agreement in place

After a failed bid to sign him over the summer, Barcelona are reportedly set for a fresh assault for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho in January.

As noted by BBC Sport, Liverpool rejected up to three bids from the Catalan giants for their Brazilian playmaker, with the last said to be around £114m.

It came after the 25-year-old had an impressive season last year, scoring 14 goals and providing nine assists in 36 appearances in all competitions to prove how important he is to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Despite the summer being filled with speculation over his future as well as handing in a transfer request, Coutinho, to his credit, has reintegrated back into the Liverpool team after initially being left through injury and has reinforced why the Reds were so keen to keep him with four goals and three assists in nine outings.

In turn, the Merseyside giants will surely hope to convince him to stay, but according to Sport they will likely have to be braced for another effort from Barcelona to prise him away from Anfield.

The report claims that while an agreement on personal terms still exists from the summer which is only half the battle won, Barcelona will make a €120m bid to try to finally bring an end to the transfer saga.

It’s evident as to why Ernesto Valverde wants to add the former Inter ace to his squad, as he’ll need to eventually replace club icon Andres Iniesta who turns 34 next year.

With Ousmane Dembele brought in this past summer to form a new attacking trident alongside Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, adding Coutinho to the mix would mean more youth and a longer-term plan to build a new cycle, while also complimenting what Barca already have.

It’s all well and good discussing how it would work at the Nou Camp though, but the fact remains that as was the case all summer long, there is still no agreement in place between the two clubs and that ultimately is still the biggest stumbling block in a possible transfer.
