Real Madrid have pulled off one of the coups of the summer with the signing of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea.
The 26-year-old is widely regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers and most football fans would agree that he’s an upgrade on Keylor Navas.
Courtois leaves Chelsea seven years after signing for the west London outfit from Genk. However, the Belgium international spent the first three of those seven years on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he was a huge success.
It was at the Vicente Calderon where Courtois established his status as one of Europe’s best young keepers.
He played a starring role in Atleti’s remarkable 2013-14 La Liga winning campaign and also helped the club win the Copa del Rey, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup. He also reached the 2013-14 Champions League final but was denied a winners’ medal by, ironically, Real Madrid.
Courtois has further enhanced his reputation at Stamford Bridge over the past four seasons and now returns to Madrid, where his children live.
However, Courtois has now tarnished his legacy in the eyes of Atletico fans, who have taken to social media to call him a snake, a rat and much worse.
Atleti fans remind Courtois what he said about Real in 2013
Even though they already have a world-class keeper in Jan Oblak, many supporters regard Courtois’ decision to join Los Blancos as a betrayal.
One prominent Atletico fan-run Twitter account – the aptly-named @AtleticoFans – immediately sent the following tweet to Courtois, after news broke of his transfer to the Bernabeu, reminding him of what he said about Real Madrid back in 2013.
They tweeted to Madrid’s new first-choice keeper: “Hey @thibautcourtois just a little reminder of that time you stood on the Madrid town hall balcony and told Real fans to “f*** themselves up the ***”. Thought you’d like to remember it.”
Oof. This looks pretty awkward now.
Let’s hope Real Madrid fans have forgotten about this, eh Thibaut?
It’s also fair to assume that Courtois’ plaque outside the Wanda Metropolitano – Atletico’s home since last summer – will be the subject of some serious vandalism over the coming days.
Atleti may even decide to remove it altogether.
Still, it’s hard to imagine that Courtois will be too shocked by the reaction from Atleti fans. He must have expected it.
