Manchester United may just have made their first summer transfer breakthrough, with Jose Mourinho already plotting his major squad overhaul.

It has been a tough debut season at Old Trafford for Mourinho, who replaced former mentor Louis van Gaal and was tasked with re-establishing the Red Devils as a force in both the Premier League and Europe. They have not won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

It has been a tough debut season at Old Trafford for Mourinho, who replaced former mentor Louis van Gaal and was tasked with re-establishing the Red Devils as a force in both the Premier League and Europe. They have not won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

According to the Daily Express, Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has agreed to return to the Premier League in a £110million deal. The transfer would see United eclipse the world record they set by signing Paul Pogba last summer, while Bale would return to the top of that list having held it when he joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur four years ago.

Failure to score goals has been a big issue for United this season, with seven sides having found the net on more occasions. They have drawn a staggering 13 games this season, and since the injury to 28-goal star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, they have looked particularly flat. But Bale could be the perfect man to solve the problems, having gone through another tough season at the Santiago Bernabeu due to a host of injuries.

The Welshman may have won the Copa del Rey and two Champions League trophies, while on the verge of a first LaLiga triumph, but it has not been plain sailing all the time for him in Spain. Fans have often been on his back and there may not be too many complaints if he were to leave at the end of the season, especially with reports linking Los Blancos with a move for Chelsea star Eden Hazard.

United have been linked with moves for Torino frontman Andrea Belotti and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann. Mourinho could have a hefty amount of money to spend in the summer, and he will be boosted if the club can clinch the Europa League and with it a route back into the Champions League.

The 20-time Premier League champions are big fans of Gareth Bale, having tried to sign him numerous times before. Now, they could finally get their man.
