Zinedine Zidane has denied Carlo Ancelotti’s claim that he agreed the Real Madrid-Bayern Munich referee was poor. “We talked about other things.”

Ancelotti suggested video assistant referees were needed after Viktor Kassai wrongly awarded Madrid two goals and Arturo Vidal a red card for two bookable offences, but Zidane refused to discuss the Hungarian’s performance on the night.

“We suffered. We played against the best team [we’ve faced] by far,” the Frenchman said after Los Blancos’ progression into the Champions League semi-finals.

“We had many chances in the first half but then we lacked tranquillity.

“The ref? I talked to Ancelotti and that’s it, I never go into referees. Anything can happen. We talked about other things.

“Whistles at Ronaldo? He showed that in the key moments, he’s there. He makes the difference.

“When he has to be there, he is. He’s unique and we’re happy for him, the team and the fans that helped us at the Bernabeu.

“Asensio and Isco? Isco did well and so did the others. We’re a team with world-class players, and they can play for 90 or 10 minutes.

“Taking off Ronaldo? I wanted to, but Kroos had a problem.”
