Messi nominated for Laureus Sportsman of the Year award as the only footballer

Lionel Messi is among the six nominees and the only footballer nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award.

The world’s sports media have cast their votes and the Nominees for the landmark 20th Anniversary Laureus World Sports Awards have been confirmed.

The greatest sportsmen, sportswomen and teams now have just over a month to wait to see if they have won a prestigious Laureus Statuette at the world’s pre-eminent international sports Awards Ceremony in Berlin on February 17.

Laureus’ reason for Messi’s nomination:

FIFA World Footballer of the Year and Ballon d’Or winner for a record sixth time. In May he scored his 600th career goal for FC Barcelona. With 36 goals in 2018/19, he was top scorer in La Liga for a sixth time. In November he passed 40 goals in a year for the 11th time.

And Messi has been nominated for this award in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016 but has not won once.
