Miha Mlakar: Oblak is a blend of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, but in goal

Atletico Madrid have a rich history of signing talented goalkeepers since the turn of the millennium, and Jan Oblak is perhaps the best of the bunch.

The Slovenian picked up his fourth Zamora trophy on Monday night, and his agent, Miha Mlakar, has been full of praise for his client.

“Well, in the world of goalkeepers, Oblak is a mixture of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi,” Mlakar explained.

“For me, Messi is the best player on the planet in terms of talent, whilst Ronaldo is the best in terms of professionalism.

“Of course, we have to respect the other great goalkeepers that play important roles within their teams.”

Having already won four Zamora trophies, Oblak has essentially held a monopoly over the award, and whilst the player himself isn’t interested in the focus put on individual accolades, his agent has been very complimentary.

“Each of the four he has won have been special,” Mlakar confirmed.

“They all have the same value, but perhaps the first one was the most important, especially with how they have been at Atletico.

“I don’t think people didn’t believe in him when he arrived, but after [Thibaut] Courtois and [David] De Gea, there were very high expectations, even though Oblak had won three trophies in the previous year with Benfica.”

Mlakar further explained the achievement of Oblak winning the award for the best goalkeeper in Spanish football, looking at the context in which these trophies have arrived.

“I think that winning the Zamora in four successive seasons in a league where the last 10 winners of the Ballon d’Or have come from is sufficient proof of his quality,” he added.

“For Jan, team trophies are always more important than individual ones.”
