It was a case of déjà vu for Arsenal as the 5-1 mauling at the Allianz Arena was followed up by another 5-1 win for Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium. This completed a 10-2 aggregate win for Bayern to book a quarter-final spot, which had basically been secured in Germany last month anyway.

Napoli got back into the tie with Real Madrid after a dominant first half but could only lead one nil at the break. This allowed the holders to battle back to win 3-1 in Naples and complete a 6-2 aggregate victory.

Barcelona’s pre-match unwavering confidence the first leg deficit could be overturned was well placed as Barca incredibly beat Paris Saint Germain 6-1 at the Nou Camp to secure a 6-5 victory on aggregate. Two up at half time it became three early in the second half but an away goal for PSG on the hour seemed to secure the tie. However, dramatically Barcelona created Champions League history by overturning a four nil first leg deficit with goals in the 88th, 91st and 95th minute completing the turn around.

After losing the first leg in Portugal – with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing a penalty – a hat trick from Gabon international Aubameyang helped Borussia Dortmund to a comfortable 4-0 win over Benfica in Germany. This saw former European Champions Dortmund to a comfortable 4-1 aggregate win.
