Arsene Wenger opens up on missing out on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi moves

Sitting in BeIN SPORTS studio Arsene Wenger was asked if he had ever tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo before the Portuguese joined Manchester United.

The former Arsenal manager replied: “Yes, you have to live with regret in life with unachieved business. And this is a big part of it.”

The 69-year-old also confirmed Arsenal had been trying to sign Lionel Messi.

The Gunners lured away Cesc Fabregas, another La Masia gem back in September 2003, and were eyeing a chance to get the young and promising Argentine.

The Frenchman turned down rumours that Messi had been given an Arsenal shirt during negotiations.

“Never [had Messi with an Arsenal shirt]. We were in discussion with him when we bought Fabregas. You can realise sometimes what fantastic youth teams you had before when you’re a club like Barcelona.

“But in the same team: Messi, Pique and Fabregas. Pique and Fabregas came to Spain, Messi came to England and Messi stayed in Spain. We were interested in him, yes. But he was untouchable at the time.”
