“My relationship with Florentino Perez, our president, has always been very good,” Zidane said in his pre-Villarreal presser, making it clear that all gossips of allegedly bad relations between the two are false.

“He brought me here, to this great club. I will never forget that. Then each one can interpret things, for good or bad. I do not have to clarify everything, and cannot control what is said outside. I don’t care, in the end, I just care about the day to day work, what I am doing here, and the opportunity to coach this great squad and be at this great club.”

What is known though is that Perez still has his involvement in decision making when it comes to the outbound transfers, despite giving promises he wouldn’t interfere in Zidane’s dealings.

A most recent example was Gareth Bale’s move to China which was reportedly stopped by Florentino Perez due to the transfer fee being unapologetically low for the Welshman. The president spent good money on the player in the past and wouldn’t want to let him go for cheap.
