De Ligt ‘set to return to Ajax training’ on Monday with future unresolved

Matthijs de Ligt is still waiting for news. There’s an agreement with Juventus and, in principle, it seems the transfer could happen in a matter of days. However, talks between Juve and Ajax have stalled and the defender’s futue remains uncertain.

While the situation is not resolved, De Ligt is due back in for preseason training with Ajax on Monday. The Dutch club are already back in work but those involved in the UEFA Nations League with their country were given an extended break.

If Juve and Ajax don’t reach an agreement, De Ligt will put his boots back on wondering about his future. It still seems almost impossible that he will remain at Ajax for another season.

De Ligt’s agent, Mino Raiola, has a deal with the Old Lady. However, reports in Italy say the centre-back is not certain he will have a big role at the Italian club. It’s been said he phoned coach Sarri to ask about his plans.

To all this, we can add in Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu’s enigmatic comments on De Ligt at Frenkie de Jong’s presentation: “I know where De Ligt will play, but I can’t say.”
