Real Madrid ask La Liga if they can play first three games away from home

Real Madrid have requested to LaLiga that they play their first three matches in LaLiga Santander away from the Santiago Bernabeu next season due to construction work that will be undertaken at the stadium.

The work itself is meant to last for three and a half years, but the most radical phases will be undertaken in the summer.

In fact, this summer they intend to knock down the shopping centre in the corner of the ground, known as ‘La Esquina del Bernabeu’, and remove the cover above the stadium.

The request is expected to be granted, as it was for Atletico Madrid with the Wanda Metropolitano two years ago.

The schedule for LaLiga Santander will be announced on July 4 and, in principle, there should be no problem with Real Madrid playing the first three games away from home because it is an asymmetrical calendar.

Madrid got to work on their new stadium as soon as Spain and Sweden’s match at the Bernabeu concluded on June 10.
