Lionel Messi is determined to win this summer’s Copa America to finally lift a major trophy with the Argentine national team, but Mario Kempes is worried about the Albiceleste’s chances.

The former striker believes there is too much reliance on Messi and that the player can’t do it all without some help.

“Messi on his own can’t win you championships,” he said during an interview on Radio MARCA.

“He can win you matches and get you closer to a final, but not everything.”

Kempes went on to express his displeasure at the various Argentina coaches’ treatment of the Barcelona forward.

“Every coach who comes in feels an obligation to go to Barcelona to see Messi, and that’s worrying,” he said.

“He’s the best player in the world, but the best player in the world should be left alone.

“The coach should worry about the other players.”

Kempes also explained that Barcelona’s difficult end to the season could play a role in Messi’s performance during the tournament.

“I think Messi has a lot of desire, but he comes into this in a bad way mentally and physically after the Liverpool and Copa del Rey final defeats,” he stated.
