Atletico Madrid defender offers himself to Barcelona

Barcelona and Filipe Luis’ paths have crossed many times. For one reason or another, the Brazilian has never ended up in a Barça shirt, though. So far. The transfer market is changing and finances have a big say. The Catalans have Filipe Luis’ name on the table after he offered himself to them. He’s an option to keep in mind.

Catalan press Sport claims the left-back position at Barça is well covered by Jordi Alba, who renewed his contract recently. However, there is no back up to the Spain international in the squad, so the club are looking for one — be that a young player with potential or a more experienced option who is happy with a backup role.

That’s where Filipe Luis’ name comes into the equation. His time is up with Atletico Madrid. His contract expires in the summer and he doesn’t plan on renewing it but he still feels he can continue at the top level. It’s not the time to return to Brazil and he feels good after being included in Tite’s Brazil squad for the Copa America.

Now 33, he has been in Spain since 2005. He has a lot of experience but his injury history is a concern. The option is there but Barcelona know that this summer they have to invest money where they can strengthen the starting XI.

For the left-back position, it’s enough to have a player that is a guarantee. Ernesto Valverde has not found an understudy to Jordi Alba this season after losing confidence in Juan Miranda and experimenting with centre-backs as full-backs. Filipe Luis is an affordable option who doesn’t have to be bought and would sign a short-term deal. He would understand his role and wants to fulfill his dream of playing for Barça.

However, Barça are still looking down other avenues, such as signing a younger left-back. The problem is there is no clear option, with some too expensive, some with little top-level experience and others without an EU passport. The club must weight up all the pros and cons before making a decision.
