Ter Stegen: You always suffer a little bit at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid were unable to find any way beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the second successive match, yet the German stopper made clear that it’s never easy at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Ivan Rakitic’s goal was the difference, with Ter Stegen able to keep out the shots that were fired his way.

“You always suffer a little bit at the Bernabeu,” he explained in his post-match interview.

“We know that we have a good team and we fought for our victory.

“The last few years have been very good for us at this ground, as we’ve been very successful and we want to keep it that way.”

The former Borussia Monchengladbach star believes his team played the better football in this match.

“We had more of an intention to push forward and play,” he said.

“We also knew that we had to be careful, as they have very fast players.

“We know our own strengths.”

Los Cules’ entire defence played well and kept Vinicius and Gareth Bale quiet, something which didn’t escape the attention of the German international.

“We had to do less work today, but we’ve done it well,” he added.

“[Gerard] Pique and [Clement] Lenglet have locked the door and we defended as a team.

“I’m happy with the attitude of the whole defensive line.”
