Real Madridemerged victorious from the Johan Cruyff Arena after a game in which they suffered greatly in the first half and then improved massively in the second 45 minutes.
They raised their footballing level, aggressiveness and intensity, with it ultimately paying off with a late win.
One of the main architects of the resurgence was Santiago Solari as his half-time team talk encouraged his side to go out there and show what they are capable of.
“We’re letting them s**t on us and we can’t allow that,” the Argentine began, raising his tone in an energetic address after watching Ajax be the better side in the opening half.
“We can’t play with two or three senses; we have to play with five and look inside for the sixth.
“There are times when we play the game with intent but tonight, we also have to answer back with bite.”
One of his orders to his players was to press higher and allow Ajax less time on the ball, while also showing more intensity in individual lines.
“We must advance, and everyone individually must move further forward and stick to our men like they are,” he said.
“With two short combinations, we will open up areas and that can open up many possibilities for us.”
After the collective talk, Solari also addressed several players individually to correct their positions and polish some details.
The talk had the desired impact as it helped Madrid change their direction in the game.
In the second half, they suffered much less than in the first and had more control on the game, almost always in the wider areas through Vinicius Junior and, after he came on for Gareth Bale, Lucas Vazquez.
