Jurgen Klopp insists he won’t repeat Merseyside Derby celebration

Jurgen Klopp has no regrets about the celebration that has cost him £8,000, but vowed not to make the same mistake again.

Liverpool’s manager drew a line under an issue that had bubbled away since Sunday’s Merseyside derby when he accepted an FA charge of improper conduct.

Klopp, who raced on to the Anfield pitch to embrace goalkeeper Alisson after Divock Origi’s injury-time winner, was warned about his future behaviour as well as fined.

Klopp has until 6pm on Thursday to answer the charge but he effectively made the decision to accept it on Monday night after he came in for criticism for encroaching on to the playing surface.

He admitted it was a mistake but reiterated that he did not intend to cause offence to Everton boss Marco Silva. Klopp did, however, say: ‘No, I don’t regret it in a way that it should not have happened.

‘I’m not sure football is all about a manager running on the pitch. I know that I am rather on the jump and on the run when something happens.

‘It’s not for you to change (the laws) and me to explain how the rules are. I did it. I broke a rule, I pay for it. I don’t think I have had any problems with dugouts apart from a few words but that is normal. A match ban (from the touchline), for me, would have been too much.

‘A fine is there to make you aware and make sure you don’t do it again. Now I know it, I will not to do it. There were 14 years between the first (fine, at Mainz in 2004) and the last one. It cannot happen any more — for the next 14 years.

‘If there was no rule against it, we as managers would constantly celebrate on the pitch and you would say, “That’s nice!” so the whole bench would run there!

‘I don’t think anybody thought it’s massively wrong or whatever, not even the ref. They were probably surprised themselves!’

There was unexpected support from Silva on Tuesday, who said: ‘If you ask me, I think he shouldn’t (be fined), but the FA has to decide the rules. Of course, in that moment, the manager cannot think of fines or not. It’s a moment to celebrate.’

Liverpool have some injury concerns for Wednesday night’s trip to Burnley, with Sadio Mane and Andrew Robertson both major doubts.

However Klopp hopes the dramatic win against Everton is a sign that his team’s form is building, and he wants to see improvement in forward Roberto Firmino especially.

‘It’s not that he plays his best football in each second of the game, but he’s just an important player,’ said Klopp. ‘That’s how it is with a player’s career, you have these moments where you fly and moments where you don’t. It will be fine.’

Everton, meanwhile, are hoping to capitalise on Andre Gomes’s desire not to return to Barcelona by making his loan permanent and striking a deal in January.

The Portugal midfielder’s confidence disintegrated at Barcelona but he appears to have found a home at Goodison Park.

‘There are three parts to any deal — us, Andre and Barcelona,’ said Silva, whose side face Newcastle on Wednesday night.

‘Of course our owner and our board will do everything we can to achieve it, but it is impossible to be more happy with Andre than we are in this moment.’
