Luka Modric has claimed he will not care if he doesn’t win the Ballon d’Or award next month after admitting: ‘my year was great and that’s it’.

The Croatian is among the favourites to land the individual accolade after a sensational 2018 that saw him win the Champions League with Real Madrid and reach the World Cup final with Croatia.

Modric is competing for the award against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Mohamed Salah.

Although he has already won the The Best FIFA Men’s Player prize back in September, Modric believes his sublime 12 months will not be diminished if he is not awarded the prize on December 3.

‘I said last time I’m honoured to be in this competition for this great award,’ Modric said, according to Four Four Two.

‘If it happened, no-one [will be] happier than me, but if not, nothing will change.

‘My year was great and that’s it.’

Modric played on Sunday as England beat Croatia 2-1 at Wembley to gain revenge for their World Cup semi-final defeat in Russia this summer.

Victory ensured Gareth Southgate’s side progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League, where they will now take on one of Switzerland, Portugal and either France or Holland.

Modric thought the Croatians deserved to win again, but believes the current generation of England players is on the cusp of big things.

Modric said: ‘I don’t know if they have improved since the summer. That is maybe a question for them to assess if they are improving or not.

‘But I see them like a good, young team with a bright future in front of them. They are in final four of this Nations League and it is showing that they are in a good way.’
