Man City eye transfer of 14-year-old playing in Paraguay’s top flight

Manchester City are scouting teenage sensation Fernando Ovelar.

Incredibly, Ovelar scored in Paraguay’s Superclasico last weekend — even though he is just 14 years old.

Cerro Porteno striker Ovelar, who is still two months short of his 15th birthday, netted the opening goal against their arch-rivals Olimpia, having made his senior debut a week earlier.

Ovelar is the youngest ever player to feature in Paraguay’s top division and it is understood Premier League champions City have been watching his progress, and had a scout at the Superclasico.

Paraguay are expected to call him up soon for their Under-18s side.

Cerro Porteno do not want to sell him to Europe, but City could propose him staying put and then being loaned to the Premier League in two years’ time.

USA international forward Freddy Adu, now 29, was just 14 when he scored his first goal for DC United in Major League Soccer but the youngest ever professional player is one Mauricio Baldivieso, who was only 12 when he played in Bolivia.

Sergio Aguero remains City’s main striker, seven years after a £38million move from Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

The Argentina international, whose last-gasp goal in the final game of the 2011-12 season ensured the Blues famously pipped their arch-rivals Man United to the title, is their record scorer having netted 209 times in all competitions.

But he is now 30 and has made no secret for years of his desire to end his playing career back in Buenos Aires with Independiente, his boyhood club — potentially at the end of the new contract he recently signed committing him to City until 2021.

Brazil international Gabriel Jesus was signed last year to succeed Aguero, and the 21-year-old hit his first City hat-trick on Wednesday in their 6-1 Champions League thrashing of Shakhtar Donetsk.
