The father of under-fire Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has hit out at the club for depriving of him of up to 50 goals with the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

When he took over as Los Blancos boss, Lopetegui still had the Portuguese star within his ranks, before the player ultimately sealed a July switch to Juventus.

In an interview with El Mundo, Jose Antonio Lopetegui gave a defence of his son’s performances so far.

“You have to settle for what you have at your disposal,” said Lopetegui Snr, a legendary Basque weightlifter who registered a record of 100 kilos on 22 occasions in a single minute.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was good.

“He was an important player, he scored 50 goals.

“Now, he is missing.

“Now, there is no outstanding goalscorer, not one.

“Nobody has been brought in.

“They talked about Neymar coming in, but nobody arrived… my son has been robbed of 50 goals.”

It is the worst start to a Real Madrid season since 1984/85, although Lopetegui’s father didn’t want anyone to get the wrong impression about his son being upset with the squad he has.

“He is delighted with the players that he has in the team,” his father said.

“He told me that he has great people in the team.

“He told me that they have given him everything they have and he doesn’t blame the players.

“I can’t even watch my son’s games, I get nervous.

“My other children and grandchildren will watch it, but I can’t see them, it is too difficult for me.”
