Manchester United are expected to make a revised contract offer to Anthony Martial in the coming weeks.
The unsettled Frenchman has so far refused the club’s proposals as he considers a move away.
Martial’s contract runs until 2020. United have made an offer to Ander Herrera also but he has still to agree.
United can exercise a one-year clause and hope he puts pen to paper on a long-term deal. If not, the extension will allow them more time to try and sell the forward, rather than lose him on a free transfer.
The Frenchman has made five starts in his eight appearances so far this campaign.
He scored in their dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle a fortnight ago in a result that United will hope can breath new life into their campaign.
According to The Mirror Martial’s agent, Phillipe Lamboley, revealed in the summer that his client was desperate to leave Old Trafford.
He said: ‘After thinking about all the possibilities, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United.
‘It is a well-considered decision. He is under contract, United will have the last word and we will respect the decision of the club, it will go to the end of its commitment.
‘We do not have the same vision on Anthony’s future. Without the unconditional support of the fans, Anthony would have already asked to leave United.’
