The recent injuries to Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen have left Barcelona short at the centre-back position and, with the Belgian often finding himself on the injury list, there have been calls for the Blaugrana to sign another central defender.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu has now admitted that the club are considering this, and that they might make a signing.

“We’ll be on the lookout for a centre-back in the market,” he said.

“It’s bad luck that two of the four we have have gotten injured.

“We have a B team and this could translate into an opportunity for them.

“We’ll have to see what happens.”

Analysing the start to the 2018/19 season, Bartomeu wanted to hold off on rushing to conclusions.

“We’ll need to see how we are at the end of the season, that’s what’s important,” he said.

Bartomeu was speaking at the gala for the Catalan FA.
