Neymar has ruled himself out of the running to win this year’s Ballon d’Or and tipped Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to challenge for the gong.
The Brazilian, who came third in the 2015 and 2017 edition, believes his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe, Messi and Ronaldo deserve to be the three finalists.
Asked who he thought has a chance of winning the coveted award, Neymar told AS: ‘I would say, Ronaldo, Messi and Mbappe.’
Ronaldo is an obvious contender for the trophy – which will be officially presented in December – again after helping Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League title last season.
The Portugal star claimed the prize for a record-equalling fifth time last year but will face stern competition as ever from Messi and teenage sensation Mbappe, who is also fancied to win.
The Frenchman is firmly in contention after his stunning displays in the summer helped his country to lift the World Cup for the second time in their history.
Neymar on the other hand has been given an outside chance by the bookies after an injury-plagued first season with PSG and an underwhelming performance at this summer’s tournament in Russia.
The 26-year-old still managed to register an impressive 28 goals as PSG went on to win the domestic treble last season and has hit the ground running this term.
He has seven goals and three assists from nine games, but believes his chances of winning the award are slim.
Another player who will be under consideration for the Ballon d’Or is Real Madrid’s Luka Modric.
Like Mbappe, he shined on the world stage in the summer, helping Croatia to reach the final.
Modric’s performances did not go unnoticed with the midfielder winning the Golden Ball and picking up the FIFA men’s Best Player Award last month.
