Real Madrid lifts first trophy of the season, Higuain scores in Bernabeu return

Real Madrid took its Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu count to 28 after seeing off AC Milan via a 3-1 scoreline. Goals by Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Borja Mayoral ensured that the accolade credited to the memory of long-time Real Madrid president Santiago Bernabeu stayed at the Spanish capital.

Saturday’s match-up also simultaneously commemorated the 60th-anniversary of the European Cup final contested between both Real Madrid and AC Milan in 1958.

The friendly encounter welcomed the return of ex-Madridista Gonzalo Higuain to the home grounds of the European champions. The 32-year-old Argentina forward led in attack for the Rossoneri having completed a surprise loan move from Juventus this summer.

Higuain gave AC Milan fans a glimpse of what he has to offer ahead of the upcoming season and also reminded the Bernabeu faithful of his prowess by getting his side’s only goal of the night.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, looked well geared up and ready despite the shock exit of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Merengues will now switch their focus to the UEFA Super Cup clash with archrivals Atletico Madrid which is scheduled for August 18.
