Real Madrid are reportedly set to rekindle their interest in signing David Alaba from Bayern Munich following Danilo’s imminent summer exit.

Spanish publication Don Balon have reported that Real Madrid have reignited their interest in David Alaba. Los Blancos are set to make a move for the Bayern Munich defender in this summer’s transfer window, with Florentino Perez keen on landing him.

Alaba rapidly progressed through the ranks at Bayern Munich, having joined the club’s youth setup in 2008 and has gone on to establish himself as an integral figure for the senior side. So much so, that the player is currently regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world.

2016/17 turned out to be yet another fruitful season for Alaba as he made 47 appearances across all competitions for Bayern, keeping things tight at the back while also contributing to his team’s cause with 5 goals and 7 assists.

His exploits have earned the player many admirers over the years, with several top clubs across Europe making an attempt to land him. Among these, Real Madrid have been the most high profile suitors, having tailed him for a long time. And as per the report, Los Blancos are now back in the market for Alaba.

The Spanish and European champions are set to offload Danilo this summer, and the Brazilian’s departure will open up a spot in Zinedine Zidane’s squad. And the report suggests that the Real Madrid boss has, thus, turned his attention towards Alaba over a move in this summer’s transfer window.

Alaba’s versatility potentially makes him an asset for Real Madrid, as he is equally adept at playing as a left-back, centre-back as well as a defensive midfielder. The problem for the 25-year-old, though, could be the unavailability of a regular starting place.

At left-back, Real Madrid already have a quality player in Marcelo, with Theo Hernandez recently signed to become his understudy. Meanwhile, Zidane has a number of options in midfield as well, with the likes of Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric providing a reliable presence at the centre of the park.

Realistically speaking, the only viable place where Alaba can stake a claim for a regular spot is at the heart of the Real Madrid defence, where he will have to compete with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane for a regular starting berth.

The player, though, is keen on joining Los Blancos, as per the report, as he is seeking a new challenge after nine years in Germany. It now remains to be seen if Real Madrid make a formal offer to land the multi-faceted Austrian international this summer.
