Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has promised to take the game to Manchester United and Jose Mourinho when the old opponents renew acquaintances at Old Trafford in Saturday’s derby.

“I want to attack, control the game, concede a few counter attacks – but play well,” Guardiola stated. “We know the way we are going to play the next day – and we know we are going to play a real good team.

“We will attempt and do things well. We played good in some occasions, specially in Bucharest and the first half versus West Ham,” he added, speaking about a 3-1 victory last time out. “And at Stoke I noticed quickly how tough the Premier League is. With Jose it’s the same. He requires time. We need time and the world won’t give you time. This is the way it is, now there’s a game in Old Trafford It depends on how we play. I really believe now and until the last day of my career you need to play good to win the game.

“I stated it many times – I have a lot of respect for Jose Mourinho, I always try to gain knowledge from all of my colleagues – it is the same with him,” he added. “The rivalry is more from the press and we can’t handle that.
