Love him or hate him there’s no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo has a lot of confidence in himself and there’s good reason for that. Back in November he placed a bet on himself with teammates that looked impossible to win, now he could do it.
Real Madrid are in the hunt for a third Champions League trophy in a row, something that just a year ago would have seemed impossible considering no one had ever won it twice in a row before they managed it last season.
However they do need to win that to save their season as the wheels long fell off their title defence. Everyone was expecting defending La Liga to be far easier than the Champions League but as Barca have surprised everyone so have Los Blancos.
That is in part down to their forward line which spent much of the season misfiring, the BB of BBC still isn’t up to speed but Cristiano Ronaldo does seem on a one man mission, and there’s reason for that.
According to Marca back in November, when he had scored just one league goal and Lionel Messi had scored 12, Ronaldo made a bet with his teammates that he would be the league’s top scorer. Four months later Messi has 25 and Ronaldo is creeping up on him with 22.
The bet was made on a week where Real won 3-0 against Las Palmas but Ronaldo was not on the scoresheet. Instead Casemiro, Marco Asensio and Isco were amongst the goals.
Whilst the comeback to be closer to Messi is impressive it’s actually been at the detriment to Zinedine Zidane’s side as Los Blancos now trail their fierce rivals Barca by more points. Then they were eight points behind whereas now they are 15 points behind.
That said it’s impossible not to be in awe of the former Manchester United winger’s recent form. His four goals against Girona last night means he’s now scored 18 goals in the last nine league games, plus three in the Champions League in that time.
In this form it’s impossible to rule Real out of winning in Europe once again and maybe the Trofeo Pichichi could still be his for a fourth time.
